WHAT IT IS
Dichoptic techniques present different images to each eye, forcing the brain to process both simultaneously. In a dichoptic exercise, each eye receives its own visual input — through red/blue (anaglyph) glasses or screen-based polarisation — and the complete picture only comes together when both eyes contribute.
The contrast of each eye's image is adjusted to account for suppression depth: the stronger eye's input is dimmed while the weaker eye's is kept bright, equalising cortical input and coaxing the suppressing eye into active participation. As binocular function improves, the balance is rebalanced — the demand follows the patient.
This is why dichoptic therapy is described as treating the cause rather than the symptom: interocular suppression — the brain ignoring one eye — is targeted directly, and binocular vision is trained from the very first session.
HOW IT WORKS
Separate
Anaglyph or polarised optics deliver a different image to each eye. The red lens sees one channel; the cyan lens sees the other.
Balance
The dominant eye's contrast is reduced to match the suppressing eye's depth of suppression — neither eye can afford to check out.
Fuse
The task is only solvable with both channels — the brain must merge the two inputs into a single percept to succeed.
Progress
Contrast balance and disparity are adjusted in real time as suppression breaks down and fusion strengthens.
VS PATCHING
Patching has been the default amblyopia treatment for centuries. Dichoptic training takes a different route — and the comparison matters when choosing a programme.
